The atmosphere is really laid back and comfortable. The staff are relaxed and easygoing, the other patrons are friendly, and the music is always good but always a bit too loud if you ask me.
The bar is stocked with loads of tasty liquors and dairy-free milks for their extensive drink menu. Although expensive, The Coup has some of the best drinks in town! The tables are always decorated beautifully and simply. Today they had little yellow flowers. Although not everything on the weekend breakfast menu is gluten-free, there is quite a bit to choose from like the Mediterranean scramble, green eggs no ham also revamped with this recipeel sombrero, messy janes, and beachfront hot pot.
Dinner Menu - The Coup + Meet
Yesterday I decided on the el sombrero — a brown rice quesadilla of sorts with eggs, black beans, avocado, onion and mushrooms with a side of organic hash. Shelby went for the French-Canadian — buckwheat crepes with coconut butter, banana and maple syrup with a side of fresh fruit.
Shelby also ordered the drink of the day — carrot, papaya and kiwi juice. At least I think it was kiwi. Either way, she said it was delicious!
Meet the Coup Cooks
We had the perfect chat as we waited for our food. And then they made that dream come true. The duo wondered — briefly — how their little veggie cafe would be received.
They came early for the Messy Janes of toasted focaccia topped with scrambled eggs or tofuvegetables, toasted seeds and miso gravy, and they stayed late for the falafel quesadillas and tempeh shawarma.
In fact, they seemed to never want to leave. Archer and Kohen had tapped into a market that wanted their vegetarian food in a vegetarian restaurant — a place they could call their own. It worked in and it still works — maybe even better — in To accommodate their popularity, the partners expanded next door, creating a loungy version of their restaurant.
The Coup Vegan Restaurant, Calgary Alberta | Healthful Pursuit
Called Meet and who says vegetarians have no sense of humour? Meet helped shorten the lineup of those waiting for a Coup table, but it became popular in its own right. And its funky, retro rumpus-room decor was a big contributor to that popularity. The look of The Coup is also a vital part of its success. The wood-panelled walls bring in a touch of nature, while the bright pastel background and avant-garde art add a hint of the necessary Bohemian.
The room itself may be tight and compact, but the look is soothingly cohesive.
So The Coup continues to work exceptionally well. So come late morning, on the sidewalk of 17th Avenue west of 8th Street S.
