Familiar faces at all our meetings are the volunteers who give their time to running the group. This includes trained breastfeeding counsellors, trained community educators, trainee counsellors and helpers who attend regularly. Some of the mums who attend our meetings initially come along because they are having struggles with breastfeeding and are seeking extra support.

Others come because they are seeking a supportive and welcoming community where their feeding choices will be valued and respected. Others come along to meetings because they have had experiences with breastfeeding that weren't what they hoped for, and are seeking a better experience the next time around.
Many mums continue to attend ABA meetings because they have found a community that is supportive, warm, and welcoming, where they have formed friendships and connections that support their journey in parenting. What are the discussion topics? At each meeting we have an informative discussion on a breastfeeding or parenting topic, introduced and facilitated in a relaxed way by one of our trained volunteer breastfeeding counsellors or community educators. Mothers are encouraged to share their experiences and questions in our discussions.
There is also time to chat with other mums, and discuss other topics of interest within the group or individually with a volunteer. A breastfeeding counsellor is usually there if you have specific breastfeeding issues you would like to discuss one on one.
But I haven't had my baby yet! Come along to one of our meetings and get to know us before you have your baby. An ABA group meeting may be one of the few places you can see other women feeding their babies. We can help you learn how to get breastfeeding off to a great start. You can ask specific questions about your situation, or just learn more about a wide range of breastfeeding and parenting topics as you start your own parenting journey.
But I already go to a mothers group! ABA meetings are different from traditional mothers' groups, as children of all ages attend.
There will usually be children both younger and older than yours present. You can see how far you've come, and get a glimpse of what you'll be enjoying in the future.
The strength of the mother to mother support we provide as a group comes in part from the wonderful diversity of mothering experiences we all bring to our meetings. But everything's going fine!
